STEPHEN DALY TAKES CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE
Our best entry of the season assembled in Mondello Park for the Leinster Trophy weekend, the highlight event of the domestic season. Dan Daly brought his Illmor powered Reynard out for the big occasion, and just nicked pole from son Stephen in the last seconds of a wet qualifying session. Transmission trouble scuppered him converting that to a win in race 1, but not before he had lowered his own lap record while building a cushion to a fast charging Sylvie Mullins who had started from the pit road. It was Ken Fildes though who came through to win from Donal Griffin and John Daly in F1, while in taking another F2 win, Stephen Daly confirmed himself as overall champion for 2011. Peter Dwyer and Martin Daly were race 1 runners up in F2. Race 2 was stopped and ultimately abandoned to enable the rescue crew extract Dan Daly from his inverted Reynard at Lola bend. We’re happy to report that Dan is recovering well from relatively minor injuries and we wish him a speedy return to full health.

DUNBOYNE FESTIVAL OF MOTORSPORT
The sixth Spirit of Dunboyne Festival of Motorsport took place in the historic motor sporting village on Sunday 4th September. Much has changed in and around the town in the 40 odd years since the last races took place, with much of the racing circuit now absorbed into the present infrastructure.

A FAMILY AFFAIR
Twelve drivers turned out for rounds 9 and 10 of the championship with the Daly family repeating their successes from the previous event in Mondello Park. Having taken pole though, Eamon Matheson had looked set to spoil the party but had to retire after qualifying with engine problems. Two excellent races and a consistent performance all day earned Philip Shields the Magic Bullet Driver of the Day award. Our photo shows Stephen Daly leading the field towards Colonial at the start of race 2.

SUPER STEPHEN STEALS THE SHOW
Changing conditions and mixed fortunes in rounds 7 and 8 at Mondello Park produced a day to forget for some drivers but brought out superb performances both on and off the track from others and their teams. Stephen Daly excelled himself in qualifying becoming the first F2 driver to take pole in a Formula Libre Ireland championship event. He went on to win a drama filled first race which was punctuated by 2 stoppages, but had to give best to the “old man” in race 2 having lead the opening laps from pole once again. His consequent points haul now puts him firmly on top of the table and well on track at this point in the season for overall championship honours.

FILDES FINDS FINE FORM
Ken Fildes put early season woes firmly behind him bouncing right back to competitive form with dominant performances in rounds 5 and 6 in Kirkistown. Eamon Matheson had looked good to continue his good run by claiming pole, but Fildes declared his intentions by joining him on the front row of the grid. Stephen Daly emerged fastest in the closely fought F2 class and went on to similarly dominate that class hauling himself up the points table after an inconsistent start to his season.
Photo shows the drivers on race 1 podium getting into the spirit of a little celebration to mark Kirkistown supremo Richard Young’s 65th birthday. Magic Bullet’s Stanley Watson made a presentation to Richard on our behalf, and Steve Hawthorne was on hand to capture the moment!

DALY WEAVES MAGIC TO TAKE OUTRIGHT LAP RECORD!
High drama and excitement characterised our first championship visit to Kirkistown this year culminating in Dan Daly shaving a tenth of a second off Noel McIntyre’s 8 year old track record while seemingly on his way to a comfortable win in Race 1. Driveshaft failure on the last lap however deprived him of an F1 whitewash on the day, allowing Eamon Matheson to sweep past to a popular victory putting an end to a lean spell of late for the diminutive Newcastle man. There were scenes of jubilation in parc ferme as both Daly and Matheson camps celebrated their respective triumphs, while Paul Dagg, who did manage a clean sweep in F2, also got in on the act, Paul happy as well to put a recent bad run to an end.

DALY AND MULLINS SHARE OPENING SPOILS
Despite the difficult economic climate, Formula Libre Ireland had a large grid for the opening round of their 2011 Championship. Dan Daly qualified on pole position; a formality you might think in Formula Libre? Not this time, as Sylvie Mullins was less than a hundredth of a second off in his immaculate Gould. Eugene Heary Junior’s Rothmans liveried Reynard was next up just ahead of Donal Griffin in his slightly older chassis with Rover V8 Power. Despite having blown an engine in testing, Stephen Daly had stayed up late building a new one and was quickest 2 litre car, just ahead of Peter Dwyer’s beautifully re-liveried Dallara F399.
