COUNTDOWN TO LIFT OFF!
While the opening event of the season always comes too early for some drivers, we can announce further support for the class in the form of TV coverage, courtesy of Premier Machine Tools, which might be the carrot some need to get a push on to be ready for the opening rounds of our Magic Bullet Breezemount championship in Mondello Park this weekend.
With the new season having kicked off in Kirkistown recently, the all 2 litre Libre podium of Ivor Greenwood, Jim Larkham and Philip Shields come south with the cobwebs blown away and ready to take on local hot shoes Stephen Daly and Paul Dagg. Michael Roche and his trusty Dallara, now back in 2 litre having shelved development of the turbo engine, should be another combination to watch, as will F Renault mounted Martin Daly who tested in the low 54’s last Sunday. Peter Dwyer brings out his new look Dallara with freshly rebuilt Renault motor, Fergus Faherty debuts his new F Renault and Gary Graham joins the action too with his modified F Ireland.
The large capacity class promises excellent racing up front with Sylvie Mullins bringing out his Gould to take on reigning champion Dan Daly. Also Reynard mounted Eugene Heary and Donal Griffin should keep these 2 honest with Eamon Matheson and John Daly likely to feature in the mix as well, while a late decision to have his engine rebuilt has put pressure on Ken Fildes to be ready. While the Daly family have numerical advantage, the Heary family go 1 better, both Eugenes now competing in Formula Libre, with the vastly experienced Eugene Snr debuting his ex John Downey Reynard AJP. John Naylor rejoins the fray with his Lola Chevy now back on song again, all combining to make a solid grid in this class with the prospect of more to come during the season.
Breezemount Motorsports Philip Shields sampled his GP2 car for the first time in Kirkistown last week and expressed himself exhilarated by the experience while acknowledging there is still a way to go along the learning curve! He will continue with the F Masters car while he gets mileage on the Dallara. Magic Bullets Stanley Watson starts the season with his modified F Ireland while waiting for his mighty Chevy engined Indycar which he hopes to debut in Kirkistown in May. Newry man Aidan Bagnall is another on the Chevy trail, his unit going in an F 3000 chassis which he too hopes to debut in Kirkistown soon.
The All Ireland nature of the championship has undoubted appeal, none more than to the Northern based drivers who have come out in force to both compete in and support the class. There is a pool of close on 30 drivers that will compete during the year, and there is no doubt that we can look forward to some great racing as the season unfolds.
